Halloween is the evening of 31st October and it was originally referred to as “Allhallows Eve”. In times gone by, it marked the beginning of a new year. Today it is an excuse to decorated your home, get dressed up and have a party. Kids love Halloween, not just because they are off school but because they get to go “trick or treating”. In this article we will introduce you to the idea of making your own Halloween decorations and turning the activity into quality family time.

Perhaps you have visited friends and been impressed with the home made decorations or have visited a craft fair and watched a demonstrator make things in an instant, but beware. Before you suggest to the kids that they make Halloween decorations make sure you are comfortable with the idea. Not everyone has the time or the talent to make decorations. It is just a matter of sticking to what you enjoy. If you prefer preparing food then there are plenty of Halloween recipes that younger folk can get involved in preparing. Stick to what you are good at otherwise nobody will enjoy themselves.

Before rushing out to buy the bits and pieces you will need to assemble your Halloween decorations and accessories make sure you look around your house. Generally all homes with children have an endless supply of markers, glitter, balloons and coloured card. The hard part is locating it all. Look in all the “nooks and crannies” and you are sure to find most of the craft supplies you will require.

Once you have selected a Halloween party theme, for example scary spiders, you can then start thinking about specific designs. This is where the internet comes in handy. Just do a quick search for Halloween templates and you will get a huge selection of designs including spiders, bats and ghosts. It should take no more than half an hour.

Outdoor Halloween decorations can transform a home, so if you are planning to use the decorations you make outdoors make sure they are weather proof. There is no point expecting decorations made with light crepe paper to last if it is windy or it rains. To avoid disappointment it is probably best to focus on making items that are used indoors and buy any lights or decorations you intend to use outdoors.

Now to some actual suggestions. The one we most enjoy and seems to be very popular is pumpkin decorating / carving. If your children are young then carving a face on the pumpkin is definitely not a good idea but there are plenty of other options. Drawing a design on the pumpkin is just as enjoyable as well as been an activity that even toddlers can participate in.

As you grab a pumpkin and place it in your shopping trolley stop for a few minutes to make sure you are choosing one that is not damaged. This does not usually happen but the last thing you want to find when you get home is that drawing a design on the pumpkin is not possible due to bumps and dints.

Pumpkins do not have to last a long time. They are usually prepared the week before Halloween and are left up for a few days after Halloween night. Even so it is a good idea to apply a base coat of orange paint. This is not so important if you are carving a face on the pumpkin but if you are drawing a design then having a well prepared and smooth surface will help make you design stand out.

When choosing a design to trace onto the pumpkin stick to something simple. For example a basic outline of a ghost or a bat. Older children may want something a little more complicated but start with the assumption that simple and easy is good and anything complicated should be avoided.

Another activity that is very similar to carving a pumpkin is candle decorating. For this activity you will need nice thick pillar candles. It is then just a matter of tracing a design onto the candle using a template and colouring it in. For added effect some people dig down into the candle in the shape of the design.

When planning to make Halloween decorations try not to focus on the “perfect outcome”. When young children are involved don’t worry about how the decorations look. As long as everyone enjoys themselves you can consider the activity a success. More than likely you will end up doing most of the work yourself.

Perhaps after reading this article the whole process of making Halloween decorations seems like too much work. If that is the case don’t worry. There are plenty of other options. Buying decorations online is very easy and relatively cheap. Hanging spiders, scene setters and tombstones can all be used to transform you home.

For centuries, people have enjoyed the ambience and aromas created by burning candles. Prior to the modern day distillation of oils, candles were usually made from beeswax, bayberry wax or from tallow. Because these candle waxes are so soft, and not conducive to pillar or sculptured candles, candles were generally only available in containers of glass or tin.In recent decades, with the introduction of paraffin wax, our choice in the variety of candles has been greatly expanded, but also somewhat limited to those made from paraffin wax, because it is so readily available at a price affordable to most. Now there’s something new — soy wax candles. “Soy what!” you say? Well, let’s take a look.

First, Some Definitions of Candle Waxes.

BEESWAX is a substance secreted by bees and used by them in making the honeycomb. This is a sweet-smelling, natural, slow-burning wax, but limited in availability and quite expensive for everyday use.

BAYBERRY wax is made from bayberry bushes, naturally scented, with a natural green color. Makes great special-occasion candles with an old-fashion flair, but also quite expensive for everyday use.

TALLOW is a wax made from animal fats. It is inexpensive, but smokes when burned, and has an odor that interferes with scented oils.

PARAFFIN is a waxy, crystalline, flammable substance obtained especially from distillates of wood, coal, petroleum or shale oil that is a complex mixture of hydrocarbons and is used chiefly in coating and sealing in candles, pharmaceuticals and cosmetics.

SOYBEAN OIL is a drying or semidrying oil that is obtained from soybeans and is used chiefly as a food, but also in paints, varnishes, linoleum, printing ink, soap… and candles. (My 1977 dictionary doesn’t say anything about candles, so I added that to bring the definition into the New Millennium.)

How Candles Burn.Simply put, the wax is the fuel that makes the candles burn. Now, let’s take a closer look at soy candles… the new kid on the block.

>b>Soy Wax Candles Burn Cleaner. We are all familiar with the black residue that forms inside glass candle lamps from burning a paraffin wax candle. One of the best features of a soy candle is that it hardly produces any of this soot. This is evidence of a cleaner burn.

Be aware that a metal wick in a soy candle will also produce more soot than a wick made of natural fiber, like cotton or hemp. So, do pay attention to “which wick.”

Soy Wax Candles Burn Longer.A soy candle costs more to purchase, but burns from 30% to 50% longer than a paraffin candle, because the wax burns more slowly. So, when comparing price, you must also consider the quantity.

Soy Wax Candle Scent is Stronger. The natural oil in the soybean mixes well with fragrance oils and essential oils, which makes for a stronger scent that holds on and lingers longer in the air.

Made in America. We have soy bean farms as well as soy wax manufacturing plants in our own country, so soy wax candles are among the few products still “Made in America.” If this is a note that tugs at your heartstrings, then a switch to soy wax candles may be a meaningful choice for you.

There are Two Types of Soy Candles on the Market. You can purchase candles that are 100% Soy Wax, and some that are a blend of soy and paraffin. Of course, those that are totally soy, will give you 100% of the benefits indicated above; the blends with give you, well, a blended effect of those benefits.

Again, you say, “soy what!” All I’m saying is that, when it comes to candles, we now have another choice, and choices are good. For many decades, abundantly available paraffin wax candles have provided the general population with all the enjoyment and benefits of using candles, and they will continue to do so for a long time. Soy wax is new on the market, not yet as available as paraffin wax, but a product that raises thoughtful curiosity. So, now you have some food for your thoughts, and something new to chew on, as you continue to enjoy the benefits of candles.

Simple Tricks to Clean Candle Wax From Marble Candle Holders

Marble candle holders can enhance the beauty of interiors manifold. That is why these can be easily found in households. Though, the problem that often comes across with marble candle holders is that the wax dropped on the stand over the marble surface doesn’t come off easily. Thus, mentioned below are few tips and tactics to clean the surface of a marble candle stand easily. Have a look at the things needed and procedure of cleaning the candle holder.

Material Needed:

Cotton cloth or paper towel
Iron
Ice

-Spilled candle wax at times gets extremely difficult to remove but with a little smartness and care the marble surface can be wiped absolutely clean. Markets are flooded with wax cleaning solvents and cleaners but one can get rid of those tough wax spills with the help of simple household articles like cotton cloth, iron etc.

Thus, it is not required to invest money in special cleaners and solvents to remove wax from marble stone candle holders.

-The most simple way to remove candle wax from the marble surface is by heating it. All one needs to do is place a piece of cotton cloth or paper towel onto the spot along with that heat an iron on low temperature. Once the iron is heated (low temperature), place it on the cloth or paper towel and let the wax melt itself and get absorbed by the cloth or paper.

-Another simple idea to remove wax spill on any marble decoratives is by scraping it off with the help of a razor blade. It is convenient to do as the blade (a relatively blunt one) does not scratch the marble surface and thus, can be used with out any hassles. Though, the problem with it is that it may end up in leaving behind a thin film of wax which could be really difficult to remove.

Word Of Caution
-Make sure that the iron you use is low in temperature or else it might lead to sudden accidents.
-The scraper you use should be blunt enough that it does not scratch the marble surface.

BUT, you are also going to discover a whole lot more about this fun and exciting hobby… You are going to get the information that others aren’t telling you…Click Here To Grab Your Copy
You Will Discover The Secrets To Successfully Turn Your Candle Making Passion Into
Money-in-Your-Pocket…
All from the convenience of your kitchen table!

With this information you are going to learn how to successfully sell your candles both on the internet, and on the often over-looked off-line market as well…

As my passion for candle making increased I eventually took the advice of a great friend and began trying to sell my candles.

The process repeated, and once again I began stumbling and fumbling. If finding reliable & accurate information for making candles was difficult, finding information for marketing and selling them was flat out impossible…

Sure, there was plenty of information available on how to label my candles, how to package them, and even how to order my supplies in bulk to save money, but nothing was available telling me how to go about market my candles. How was I supposed to find customers? How could I leverage the internert to extend my reach?

But, like before, I pressed forward, I tried this, and I tried that. I studied traditional marketing strategies and bought online courses for selling on the internet…Click Here To Grab Your Copy

What The Heck Is A Soy Candle or… How On Earth Can You Burn a Bean?

The world is full of crazy things these days. One wonder follows another in rapid succession why not candles from soy beans?

I guess I should be used to living in a world of amazing things, I mean after all I did watch the first man set foot on the moon when I was a kid. Yes, I’m dating myself but hey… I’m proud to have witnessed that event even if it was thru a TV screen.

However, I have to admit the first time I heard of soy candles I thought “You have got to be kidding”.

For those with inquiring minds like mine who are just dying to know how they turn soy beans into soy candles here’s a quick overview.

First of all you have to squeeze the heck out of a bunch of unsuspecting soy beans to get the oil out of them. After that you take the soy bean oil and add hydrogen to it. This is called hydrogenation and is done to lots of stuff your familiar with… for example when they do it to corn oil it makes margarine or shortening.

After the soy oil is hydrogenated it changes from a liquid to a solid. Voila! You have soy wax. This is the stuff they make soy candles out of as well as other things like soy soap and soy based lotions.

For those of you who want to know who came up with the crazy idea for soy wax candles it was a fellow named Michael Richards and a bunch of kids trying to make edible birthday cake candles…LOL.

So now we know what soy candles are and where they come from but why do we care?

Because soy candles…

Burn Cleaner… Burn with about 90% less soot. They protect your indoor air quality. You won’t have to worry about sooty residue on your ceilings and furnishings or in your lungs.Last Longer… Burns up to 50% longer than other candles. Soy wax burns cooler, and therefore slower, than traditional candles. This makes them last longer. Are Non-Toxic & Biodegradable… therefore they’re less likely to trigger allergies. Are Environmentally Friendly… Soy Wax is a Renewable Resource grown by American Farmers. Not a petroleum based product. Are Easy to Clean… the low melting point of soy wax makes spills cleanable with hot soap and water.

Ok, that’s a pretty impressive list of reasons to switch to soy candles and Yahoo agrees about the benefits of soy wax, too. They’re just plain better for you.

A word of caution… soy candles can do more than keep your environment cleaner and your pocket fuller… gourmet soy candles can change your life. They sure changed mine!

But, that’s another story…

If you’re thinking of a hobby that can be turned into a small business opportunity, then candle making is something that you should consider.

Homemade candles can be of high quality turning out as good or sometimes even better then the expensive ones that you would buy from your local store, or an online candle shop.

You don’t even have to want to go into a business from your homemade candles, you could just prefer to make them for yourself as a hobby, or give them to friends or family as presents. As you can customize them to how you want with your own scents and colors.

The way your candles look and smell is limited to your imagination, as there are a countless number of different molds, scents and colors available to add to your candle wax.

Its great to experiment with different scents, trying to recreate something that you have smelt in nature, foods, fruits or drinks. Its also good to get the right colour to go with that unique scent that you have created.

My first attempt at a scented candle was a chocolate candle! I had a rich dark brown color, and the fragrance of a chocolate bar freshly unwrapped! It was to die for, looked and smelt like chocolate! It’s more like cooking then making candles sometimes with the scents and color of the wax.

There are a lot of different types of molds that you can buy, ranging from big pillar candles, to little shapes of animals and novelty items. It all depends on how crafty you want to get with your candle making! As there is something for everyone.

They are not hard to make, and isn’t that expensive to set up as all you really need is something to melt the wax into, you should try and use the double boiler method! You need a container or molds, depending on what type of candles you are wanting to make, wicks for your candles, scents, colors, and of course the wax.

There is a few different types of waxes that you can purchase, but the most economical and environmentally friendly is soy wax. If you want to make candles in molds, then you may have to add some additives into soy wax, as it’s a little softer then paraffin or beeswax.

If you are considering starting a home business for your candles, then there is also the option of buying your wax in bulk, making it more cost effective for your homemade candles. These is also better then buying a candle making kit, but if you are only looking at candles as a hobby then purchase a basic soy wax kit, as you will get all the basics that you need.

There are a few candle makers that have started as a hobby, then have enjoyed the process turning their creations into a business! You just have to look on eBay or search for candle blogs to see that there are a lot of homemade candles that are being sold for profit.

Hopefully this article helps with anyone who is either looking at making candles for a hobby, or even starting a new business. There are a few things to consider before starting making your candles, but they are an enjoyable hobby and can be a profitable business if you do things the right way!

			    About the Author

DIY Candle Making – Candle Makers Companion

Today, with the help of the internet, anyone can just order the supplies needed for making candles which can even be more superior to many popular brands. Learning how to make scented candle at home is easy and a lot of fun. The fact is candle making is not hard for a beginner to learn, the only thing it requires is creativity. Included in this article are simple and easy DIY candle making steps to create your own candle, don’t worry, there really is nothing to it so just have fun.

Click Here For Candle Makers Companion Instant Access Now!

Step #1. You will have to prepare these materials in your candle making adventure: crock pot or a double broiler, thermometer, candle wax chips, glass container with lid, wick, essential oils or scented candle oils and food coloring.

Just a reminder before you start making your candles to keep a careful watch at your wax, keep it away from flame for it can catch fire.

Step #2. Heat the wax in the crock pot or double broiler and when the wax reaches 160 degrees, mix the scented oil and stir. While the wax is heating, you can pre-heat the candle jar in the oven on lowest setting. This way the wax will adhere better to the jar. After the wax has melted, take the glass candle jar out of the oven and carefully pour the candle ingredients into the jar. You must leave a room at the top so that the lid will fit and save a little wax for topping off.

Step #3. Now, straighten the wick and lower the metal disk base into the melted wax and try your best to put the disk as close to the center of the candle as possible. Allow the candle to cool down to where there is a semi hardened crust on top and then take the wick and adjust it so that it is centered in the jar. Let the candle cool completely at room temperature, this would take as much as six hours.

Step#4. Trim wick to about a quarter inch and there you go, your very own DIY candle making project ready for you to enjoy. You can also try making candles using different containers such as porcelain, brass cans or anything that will withstand the intense heat from the plane. There you go, if in case you didn’t like the finish product, the good thing about it is that you can always reheat the wax and start over again.

Oil for candle making is a new alternative you can try if you want to begin a candle business. Convention tells us that candles are made of wax. However did you know that there are more and more people who are now patronizing oil candles? Merchants sell oil for candle crafting in bulk or wholesale.

The customary candle oil is made of liquid paraffin, but some stores market special vegetable oils. Considering that you can re-use a jar or a bottle for candle creating purposes, you can say that oil candles are more economical than wax types. Oil candles in shops look so beautiful with their many adornments from blossoms to shells that buyers often believe that oil candle making needs laboring over a hot cooker. But it might astonish you to find out that the procedure of using oil for candle making is much simpler in comparison to utilizing wax. With oil homemade candles, there’s no need for you to melt anything.

You can purchase oil from merchandisers so you don’t have to go through the procedure of thawing and cooling your main ingredient. If you are ready to try, here are the things you’ll need to have before you begin producing oil homemade candles.

First, get acquainted with your supplies. The main fuel of your handcrafted candle is paraffin oil or vegetable oils developed specifically for this purpose. The wick for your oil candle can be the same wick you can find in a oil lamp maker’s shop. You can also make use of containers with beautiful patterns engraved on them.

There’s a special tube you use to cover your container, and this will also be the anchor of your wick. An adapter adjustment ring can help you fiddle with the size of your candle wick. A pretty jar or bottle is needed for housing your oil. Place beads, dried flowers, glitters and even beads inside the jar for ornamentation. Some other ways of decorating oil candles is placing painted rocks at the bottom of the containers

A funnel is an accessory you cannot live without if you employ oil homemade candles. You need the funnel to add oil into the oil container. Adding oil is simple. Simply open the bottle and pour oil through the funnel. Now that you know the basics, you’re ready to create!

Fill your jar or bottle with the liquid paraffin oil. Do not fill the container up to the edge to avoid accidental spills. You can shift the bottle to and fro to adjust the decorations and permit them to move around in the oil.

For lightweight materials, it’s better to put them inside before pouring oil. Be sure to create an allowance for the candle wick to stick out. Prepare your wick by inserting it into the thermal glass tube. Extend a small portion of the wick to allow burning. Install the adapter ring and let your candle stay on a level surface for about ten minutes. This time frame will permit oil to soak up the wick.

After the wick has fully been suffused with oil, you can begin enjoying your oil candles. Fragrances can be added at any time. However, you should only use one type of fragrance for one candle to avoid clashing of scents. The refillable nature of oil candles make them ideal for long term use. If the oil level is low, you can simply pour more oil.
